In April 2019, Erica was awarded the Djung Yune Tchoi Memorial Excellence in Teaching Award by the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University for her work with students in the classroom. Her teaching philosophy is that it is the educator’s responsibility to help students recognize their inner skills and ability and encourage them to build upon it. She has taught courses in strategic communication, public relations, and media studies, and has experience with both face-to-face and online courses. In 2016, Erica earned an Online Teaching Certificate.

Erica’s research meets at multiple intersections of public relations, digital media, diversity and inclusion, and media representation. Her work has been published worked in both academic and public publications. She was awarded the Inez Kaiser Graduate Students of Color Award by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) for her inclusion of diversity issues in both the classroom and her research.

In addition to her teaching and research experiences, Erica also brings practical experience to the classroom. Previously, she’s managed an international organization’s website, blog, and social media accounts; produced a web docuseries; and assisted in the development of a national campaign. She also has experiences in speech writing for an Assistant Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, event planning, and pitching stories to local and national media outlets. Erica stays immersed in up-to-date research and attend conferences on the latest trends in the communications industry to share in the classroom and apply to her own research.
